Steven Lingham is a self-taught artist born in Derby, England in 1973, who previously worked as a trained
printer. He has spent the majority of his life living in Yorkshire and is now living in a small village near the beautiful old city of York with his wife. As well as winning a number of awards, Steven was also a finalist in the Daily Mail's "Not the Turner Prize" competition, beating several thousand fellow artists.

Steven is a member of the RSPB, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and The Wildlife Art Society all of which promote conservation of British Wildlife. Subsequently it is not surprising that most of his work is focused around wildlife, including his real passion for British birds. He thinks nothing of spending several hours working on an area, only inches across, to accomplish the required effect. His love for wildlife and fascination for detail makes his paintings almost photographic.

Steven uses a variety of media depending on the composure and subject matter. For most of his work he uses gouache on board. Firstly he draws the whole picture in pencil to attain tonal values, he then adds gouache applied by airbrush to give a soft focus background. Then builds up layer on layer of paint using brushes until he is satisfied he has captured the required level of detail, thus achieving an effect that brings life to his paintings.

Steven is renowned for the detailed qualities you will find in his paintings, which are becoming much sought after, and are included in personal collections world-wide from South Africa to New Zealand.
