Vic was born in Yorkshire some 64 years ago and after service in the RAF moved to East Kent where he met his future wife Sylvia and has lived ever since.
Vic came to wildlife photography via a round about route. With an avid interest in anthropology and palaeontology he became entranced by the natural closeness of humans to all other animal life on the Planet. Books by Bronowski (The Ascent Of Man is a particular favourite) Raymond Dart and others, led inevitably to work of the Leakey family, Mary, Louis and their son Richard. Fascinated by their discoveries in Kenya it reinforced a lifelong ambition to travel to East Africa. The dream was realised in the mid nineties and ever since has felt that a year without a visit to Africa is a year wasted.
Vic recalls ruefully that his first trip to Kenya was also his first try at wildlife photography and was so disappointed it was nearly his last! Fortunately the bug was too strong and within a year he had won his first Regional Arts Council Award for photography, started getting his work published, followed by articles, particularly for the Arts Magazine "Wildscape."
Regular wildlife photo workshops are a staple of Vic's work throughout the year, held at Wildwood, near Canterbury, the well known Santago Big Cat Sanctuary in Herts with the recent addition of Gorillas at Port Lympne. 2001 brought the first of several commissions for brochure photography in Africa for both a travel company and a resort Hotel 50 miles North of Mombassa.
Elected Chairman of the "Wildlife Art Society International" in early 2003, Vic organised major International Exhibitions at Bristol Zoo and Port Lympne. The work of the Society, which covers all art mediums including the traditional oils and watercolours as well as photography, batik and sculptures, will be seen again in 2004 as part of the Bristol Nature Festival.
